THERE is a palpable air of tension in some areas of Dublin following this week's spate of shootings. Miraculously, no one was killed in the three shootings but they marked a new low for the drug and gun gangs.
A baby missed death by inches while a grandmother and elderly man were deliberately targeted by the gunmen.
Ten people have died since the start of the decade in this particular feud and gardai are well aware of the identities of those behind it.
Garda Commissioner Fachtna Murphy has deployed specialist garda units and detectives have stepped up surveillance and patrols.
It is virtually impossible to prevent a lone gunman carrying out a shooting. The only way to stop him is to put him off the streets.
Mandatory sentences for carrying guns must be strictly enforced. Resolute, firm action must be taken against these new "men of violence" -- for all our sakes.
